Datadog has been expanding their certification program and the Fundamentals credential is their entry-level offering. I sat for it last month to give you an honest take on what it covers and whether it is worth your time.
Datadog is an observability and monitoring platform that has become a standard tool in cloud-native and DevOps environments. If you work in infrastructure, platform engineering, or site reliability engineering in a company that has moved significant workloads to cloud, there is a reasonable chance Datadog is already in your environment. Knowing the platform well enough to use it effectively is a genuine work skill and the certification is an attempt to formalize that knowledge.
The Fundamentals exam covers navigating the Datadog platform, creating and interpreting dashboards and monitors, understanding core concepts like metrics, logs, and traces, and the basics of APM and infrastructure monitoring. It is entry-level in the way that most vendor fundamentals credentials are: broad enough to give you a coherent overview, shallow enough that passing it does not make you an expert.
The exam itself was straightforward if you have spent meaningful time working in Datadog. The questions are practical rather than obscure, focused on things you would actually do in the platform rather than edge cases or deep configuration options. I passed without spending a lot of time on dedicated preparation beyond reviewing the platform features I had used less frequently.
Whether it is worth it depends on how central Datadog is to your role. If you are in an environment where Datadog is the primary observability stack and you interact with it daily, the certification gives you a structured credential to reference in hiring conversations and validates that you know the platform beyond accidental familiarity. If you use Datadog occasionally or not at all, there are better credentials to spend your preparation time on.
Vendor certifications in general live and die on how recognizable the vendor is in your target market. Datadog is recognizable enough in cloud-native engineering circles that this credential has real signal value in that community. In more traditional enterprise environments where Datadog is less prevalent, less so.
